After reading about this "hobby" in the Columbus Dispatch I am
hooked - what a great way to get people out and about. I am working
on my stamp and have already thought of several places to hide a
box.

Welcome to our pastime or obsession, should I say!

Hi all! We're "The End Gang", and have finally got around to joining
the group. Our family of 5 started letterboxing in August. P2 F65
X14. Living in Ct. has made for a great start! Have letterboxed alot
in No. Va. as well. We planted "Beckley Furnace" last month. If you
pass through the NW corner of the state, hope you have time for this
box. See you out there! --- Koyote

I just discovered letterboxing and can't wait to get started. A trip
in September to Connecticut and Maine should get me off to a flying
start judging by what I saw on the letterbox website. I've read all
the faq's and quite a few of the posts so have a pretty good idea what
it's all about. I'm sure I'll come up with questions as time goes
by. For now, I'd like to start by placing a box. I found info about
state parks in several states - and that national parks are a no-no -
but can't find any info about Florida state parks. Does anyone know
if we are allowed to put letterboxes in FL state parks? I did see a
form letter to send to the State Dept of Parks - and I will do that
unless someone already knows it's ok.
Thanks and I'm glad to have found you.

Kathy,

This is just my personal opinion, but I would suggest you wait to place a
box until you have found a few in the area you are considering. I think it
is helpful to see what "works" best as far as concealment and packaging.

I know you have read the FAQs (good for you!) but nothing replaces
experience. I learned the most when I was able to hook up with another
local boxer or two. When you do start hunting, be sure to rehide the box
carefully for the next lucky treasure hunter!

You will have a great time in Connecticut-the mesa of letterboxing. I just
returned from a trip up there.

There is a newboxers group that you would probably enjoy; I am sorry I do
not have the link. It is another yahoo group. And I bet there is a local
group for the Florida or South East as well. Enjoy yourself and welcome to
the community!

Kathy-- Where in Florida are you? I'm in the Fort Lauderdale area.

There's a yahoo list for the SE US, which is a very friendly group, and
several of us in Florida are on it.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/letterbox-southeast/

If I remember right, the FL state parks allow boxes and geocaches with the
permission of the park manager, but it's been awhile since I read the
information, and I can't find the website I used right now, cause the link doesn't work
anymore.

Do you have any boxes near you at all? I agree with whoever said it's a
good idea to find some before you try planting.

How long to wait before planting (was [LBNA] New member)

*****While I agree with Mama Stork wholeheartedly - I
had big plans to plant my first box before I ever
found one, then I found one and realized I may not be
as quick as I thought I would be in planting - but I
do believe that you shouldn't wait TOO long to plant
one.

We had a discussion on the Texas list not too long ago
about how planters make better finders and re-hiders.

Once you check out the local situation and see what's
customary in your area, go for it! Don't be
heartbroken if you lose some at first, because you
probably aren't as good a hider as you will become.
Just persevere!

Lucy

Pam, thanks for the info. I did sign up for the newboxers group and
also for a southeast group that someone else mentioned. Can't wait
to get started...

Lucy, thanks. I think I'll try to find someone to go out on a hunt
with me maybe next week. It's been tooooooo hot here to think about
going this week. Will probably pick the closest one even though
there is only one there. There are none listed in Citrus County
where I live so maybe I'll get to be the first??

Welcome, Kathy! Glad you found your way over here!

I haven't made it to Tampa for boxing yet. Sarasota's the closest I got
last year. If you ever want to come south, though, we'd love to have you find
our boxes. And there are some nice ones in the Keys, too.

I keep sending out vibrations to get the Orlando people to throw a
gathering this year, but I'm not sure they're getting my telepathic message!
